
Basic Understanding of Zone 0 and Zone 1
ATEX and IECEx zoning separates locations by how often workers may encounter dangerous gases, vapors or dust. Zone 0 is an area where flammable gas or vapor is present continuously or for long periods. Zone 1 is an area where it may occur during normal operating conditions.
Where Do These Zones Appear?
- Zone 0: inside fuel tanks, chemical reactors, tanker compartments, pipes and drains carrying combustible liquids
- Zone 1: around process equipment, loading points, pumps, valves and other locations where release can happen during normal operation
Why Do Zones Need Specific Lighting?
Lighting can become an ignition source through electrical faults, surface temperature or damaged enclosures. Correctly certified fixtures reduce ignition risk, protect people and assets and help plants meet their safety requirements.
Requirements for Selecting Lighting
- Match the fixture to the zone, gas group and temperature class
- Check the Ex protection method and ATEX or IECEx certificate
- Select suitable IP rating, impact resistance, ambient temperature and mounting method
- Plan maintenance access without compromising the enclosure or flame path
